The postdoc will be based at Nikhef, working within the detector R&D and gravitational wave physics groups. The detector R&D group is active in the development of novel detector technologies for (astro-) particle physics. For this position Nikhef collaborates with SRON, the Netherlands Institute for Space Research. The Nikhef gravitational wave physics group is a member of the Virgo Collaboration and plays an important role in design studies for Einstein Telescope. One focus area is on instrumentation for gravitational wave detectors such as accelerometers, interferometric techniques, and wave-front sensing & controls. In the context of the National Science Agenda, route ‘Building blocks of matter and fundamentals of space and time”, Nikhef and SRON invite applications for a postdoc position in instrumentation for future gravitational wave detectors. Particularly on the development of new segmented wave-front sensing systems that can be applied in upgrades of the current Advanced Virgo detector, the next generation ground-based detector Einstein Telescope, and the LISA interferometer in space.
This project is in collaboration with the Dutch institute for space research SRON, responsible for a design based on space-qualified components, and for a design study of the ground support equipment and hardware simulators needed to simulate the LISA conditions in space.
The candidate requires a PhD in (astro-particle) physics, applied physics or other relevant field, preferably with experience in gravitational wave instrumentation. Applicants are expected to possess good communication skills and be able to work in a team of physicists and engineers. The candidate has the ability to work on a project basis with (industrial) partners and to manage a team of engineers and scientists. Offer The Postdoc position is offered for 2 years with the possibility of a one-year extension. The successful candidate will be employed by the NWO-I foundation. The position is based in Amsterdam. You will receive a competitive salary. The conditions of employment are excellent and include extra months' salary payment in May and December and good travel facilities.
