University of Florida: three full-time postdoctoral positions

Jan 08, 2017

The Experimental Astrophysics group at the University of Florida invites applications for up to three full-time postdoctoral assistantship positions in ALPS, LIGO and LISA.

The axion-like particle search (ALPS) experiment is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Heising-Simons Foundation. The main experiment is located at the Deutsche Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg, Germany. The interested postdoc is expected to work on the research, development and the design of the ALPS experiment as well as a follow up experiment to measure vacuum birefringence. Most of
the work will be performed at the University of Florida although some travel to DESY is required.

The LIGO group at the University of Florida carries out research on LIGO instrument science related to the Input Optics of the LIGO interferometers, materials studies for future interferometers, and research on controls for gravitational-wave interferometers. The interested candidate is expected to participate in all aspects of this research.

LISA is the leading candidate for ESA’s L3 mission which is expected to be supported by NASA and the US scientific community through NASA grants. The interested postdoc is expected to work on tests related to the interferometry measurement system such as experimental tests and simulations of the telescope and the optical bench. While most work will be performed at UF, some travel to Goddard Space Flight Center and to ESA-member states in Europe is required.

Ideal candidates for  these positions have experience in laser interferometry, optical cavities, length and alignment sensing and control systems as well as digital data acquisition and signal processing  systems. Employment of more senior candidates is also possible.

For full consideration, applications must be submitted online at and must include: (1) a cover letter and (2) a complete curriculum vitae. In addition, names and email address for three references must be provided on the application. An email will be sent automatically to your references, requesting them to upload their letter.  Application review will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The final candidate will be required to provide an official transcript to the hiring department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered "official" if a designation of "Issued to Student" is visible. Degrees earned from an educational institution outside of the United States require evaluation by a professional credentialing service provider approved by the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES), which can be found at
