Faculty Position in Experimental GW Physics at Cardiff University, Wales

The School of Physics and Astronomy at Cardiff University invites applications for a faculty position in experimental gravitational-wave physics at the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level, available from Autumn 2019.
This new appointment is part of a long-term expansion of Cardiff University's Gravity Exploration Institute, which was founded in 2018 in recognition of the substantial contributions made by Cardiff researchers to the establishment of gravitational wave astronomy. Gravity Exploration Institute members have expertise spanning all areas of gravitational-wave astronomy, including numerical relativity, source modeling, data analysis, astrophysical interpretation, experimental gravitational-wave physics, and outreach. The Institute consists of seven full-time (Katherine Dooley, Stephen Fairhurst, Hartmut Grote, Mark Hannam, Chris North, Vivien Raymond, Patrick Sutton) and two part-time (Bangalore Sathyaprakash, Bernard Schutz) academic staff, 2 research fellows, 6 postdoctoral researchers, 1 research software engineer, and 12 PhD students. Cardiff also has an active programme in transient astronomy / electromagnetic follow-up of gravitational wave events, led by Cosimo Inserra. Our research is supported by the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), the Royal Society, and the European Horizon 2020 programme.
Cardiff University is the fourth largest group worldwide in the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and is a founding member of GEO600. It has played a leading role in these collaborations from their inception through to the recent first direct detection of gravitational waves. The group is also active in the planning and development of future detectors, such as LIGO-India, the Einstein Telescope and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
The successful candidate is expected to broaden and strengthen our current research in gravitational-wave astronomy and, in particular, to contribute to building a world-leading group in gravitational-wave experimentation together with existing faculty H. Grote and K. Dooley. We seek individuals with a strong background in instrumentation for gravitational-wave detection and precision measurement techniques. An interest in fundamental physics research would be welcome.
Applicants must have the demonstrated ability, or strong potential, to establish and maintain a vigorous experimental physics research program and obtain external research funding. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field. Candidates must have strong communication skills and demonstrate an overall commitment to the educational, research, and teaching mission of the School of Physics and Astronomy.
